Can’t Sleep? Go Take A Hike!
A Sound ZZZZzzzzs Solution for Kids and Everyone Else
YEAH, WELL if you wanted to exercise you’d already be able to sleep, so since you’re not sleeping, you’re probably not exercising , and have no intention of doing so.
Intentions can be changed, yes? First, let’s review the results of yet another “recent study” and then on to a suggestion.
It’s long been known that exercising during the day typically results in a restful sleep at night. But scientists didn’t really know the particulars until recently.
The results are particularly encouraging for parents.
Turns out that the amount of exercise children in the study had during the day directly influenced the amount of time it took for them to fall asleep once in bed.
- For every hour of sedentary activity during the day, it took an additional three minutes for the children to fall asleep at night.
- Those kids who fell asleep faster ultimately slept longer, getting an extra hour for every 10-minute reduction in how long it took them to slumber.
Adults aren’t much different — the research demonstrates similar results for you.

And now on to my suggestion…
OK, what I’ve written does not come as a surprise, does it? And this information is not suddenly going to inspire you to become a threat to Lance Armstrong, is it? So, consider this:
If you’re having a hard time getting to sleep, and you need more sleep, and you want to do something to get more sleep… just take a walk.
A walk’s not exercise. (Repeat three times.)
A walk is just an outside frolic… a stress-buster… and an insight-producer (they happen more when walking than showering). Grab your ipod and crank something inspirational. Do it in the house while you’re just contemplating taking a walk. Perhaps the music will move you to move outside. Your feet will carry you from there.
