10 Health Gifts For You And Yours

It’s gift buying time. Why not get something that’s truly meaningful, something that improves the most precious gift of all — health.  Here are 10 health gifts to consider.  From $30 Whey Protein to the $318 monster Breville Juicer.  Not to mention the FitBit, one fine diagnostic tool that’s fun to experience. Oh, be sure to check out the “4-Hour Chef” trailer too.  Happy shopping!

WITH CHRISTMAS, Hanukkah and the rest of the gift-giving holidays at our front door, it’s time to show you the presents I’d recommend that you buy for your family, friends, and (of course) yourself.

Given that this is a health site of sorts, it surely makes sense to promote some health gifts.  One of them may give someone you know the needed kickstart to get healthier.

If one or more of these 10 8* catches your fancy, the link will take you to a fuller description, and the place to make a purchase. Know that most of these are affiliate links which means that your purchase would provide me a commission, though this does not affect the price.

(* Update: The Restful Sleep and Skin Care gift boxes are no longer available.)

Fitbit

(Update: the links here take you to Fitbit’s amazing Aria, a scale that wirelessly tracks your weight, body fat percentage, and BMI, but once on their site, you’ll quickly find the wearable Fitbit.)

As the people at Fitbit like to say, “You’re just steps away from better fitness.”  That’s because during the day, it tracks your steps, distance, calories burned, and stairs climbed.

Come nightfall, FitBit measures your sleep cycle, helps you learn how to sleep better, and wakes you in the morning.

You get a lot of data and it’s graphically displayed on your computer so you can keep track on how you’re doing.

Garmin Touchscreen Watch

Staying with cool monitoring devices for a moment, I submit for your consideration the Garmin Forerunner 610.

Or, as it’s fondly referred to the marketing literature: “Garmin Forerunner 610 Touchscreen GPS Watch With Heart Rate Monitor”.

Here’s its attributes:

  • Weather-resistant, GPS-enabled training watch supports customizable data screens and advanced training plans
  • Touchscreen interface for quickly and easily toggling data fields, adjusting settings, reviewing run history, and more
  • Virtual Partner and Virtual Racer help you plan workouts and reach goals; Training Effect measures impact on aerobic fitness
  • Customizable vibration alerts for time, distance, calories, heart rate, or cadence; heart rate zone training with included monitor
  • USB stick for wireless uploading of run data to Garmin Connect–map your activity, view lap splits, and explore activities from other users

The 4-Hour Lifestyle

Now that you’ve got two good ways to monitor your fitness, how about learning how to cook the foods that will get you fit? Or, actually, as TIm Ferriss would say it, learn to effectively learn anything fast.

Yes, as you may have heard by now, there’s now a third book in Mr. Ferriss’ “4-Hour” collection.

He began with the The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich , after which he wrote The 4-Hour Body: An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman.

And now it’s The 4-Hour Chef: The Simple Path to Cooking Like a Pro, Learning Anything, and Living the Good Life.

One review says this:

“Wildly inventive.. [a] rangy, obsessive immersion in food and its many wonders. [T]he tools needed to learn to cook well can be deployed in every manner of endeavor, from skinning a deer to memorizing a deck of cards. The author distills them into minimal, learnable units and examines how to order the units so as to keep readers engaged in their endeavors. Ferriss is a beguiling guide to this process, at once charmingly smart aleck-y and deadly serious, and he aims to make readers knowledgeable and freethinking.” – Kirkus Reviews

But I think that review misses on big part of the book and Ferriss’ desire for his reader, which is to supercharge the learning of new skills. As he writes on page six:

‘Whether you want to learn how to speak a new language in three months, how to shoot a three-pointer in one weekend, or how to memorize a deck of cards in less than a minute, the true ‘recipe’ of this book is exactly that: a process for acquiring any skill.”

Lotsa pictures, lotsa stories, lotsa colors, and one heck of a trailer:

Whey Protein

One thing that is a mainstay in my kitchen is Whey Protein.  I rarely eat meat for a whole host of reasons I won’t bore you with right now, and sometimes ImmunPlex Undenatured Whey Protein (306grams, powder)I simply need more protein with my meal.

As frequent readers know, I exercise quite a bit, and when muscles get taxed, they need to be fed protein.  So, what I do is grab Prohealth’s ImmunPlex Undenatured Whey Protein, which is a fancy name for pure Whey Protein.

Two scoops in a cup or two of almond milk gives me 18 grams of protein (plus whatever is in the almond milk).

As superstar weight lifting and nutrition coach, Charles Poliquin says: “Use Whey Protein To Improve Body Composition: Take It To Prevent Holiday Weight Gain.”

Juicers — Mighty Machines for Health

Juicers are among the best health gifts one can give or get. I say this from experience.  Search this site for “juicing” and you’ll quickly discover that I’m a big advocate of juicing.

There’s a mighty fine reason for this.

A friend of mine owns a vitamin supplement company and takes, literally, over 50 of them each day, and yet when I once asked him which is his most valued supplement, he said what he valued most wasn’t a supplement at all:

“The most important thing for my health that I can do”, this CEO told me, “is to ingest fresh vegetable and fruit juice every day.”

You’ve heard the phrase that “food is medicine”. Well, that presumes that it’s high quality, fresh food filled with enzymes, flavonoids, antioxidants and phytonutrients. There are no better source for these healthy ingredients than fresh vegetable and fruit juice!

For more on this topic and a deep dive into the relative merits of three juicers I’m about to present, read my post, “A Kick-Ass Reboot Juice Habit For You!“.

Now, to the juicers, all of which I’ve used, as described in the above “Kick-Ass” post.

The Breville Juicer

The Breville Dual Disc Juice Processor is a space-age looking machine that makes fast work of shredding the juices from fruits and veggies.

Consider these fine qualities:

-The puree disc and insert retains fiber-rich pulp for thick, all fruit smoothies or healthy dips, sauces, soups, and sorbets

-Electronic 5 speed dial maximizes juice yield from soft fruits and leafy greens, to harder fruits and vegetables

-1200 Watt motor (huge)

-Heavy grade die-cast metal body

-3-Inch feed tube processes whole fruit

The Champion

The Champion Juicer Heavy Duty Juicer is indeed a champion because it’s been around for decades, never falters, and is a true work horse.  Mine still shines after 15 years of fairly steady use.

The Champion boasts:

-A Heavy Duty Juicer for Fruits and Vegetables

-Large 1.75″ Diameter Feed Tube

-10 Year Limited Manufacturers Warranty (1 Year on cutter blade and screens)

-Includes – Instruction Manual, Juicing Screen, Sieve, Blank Screen, & Tamper

The Omega Juicer

The Omega Masticating Juicer is different from the other two above.  Whereas the Breville and Champion grind the juice from fruits and vegetables, the Omega “masticates”, or, squeezes the juice out.

Some people think that this masticating process yields better juice.  It may, but the trade off is that it’s slower.

What you get:

-Easy-to-use masticating juicer with powerful commercial motor

-Low speed of 80 RPMs; no foaming, clogging, or heat build-up with 110 volt

-High juice yield; auto pulp-ejection function for continuous juicing

-Dual-stage juicing system; quiet operation

Next up are two Gift Boxes from ProHealth.  Take your choice: sleep or skin.

People in the indusrialized world are sleep deprived.  Too many things to do, too much stress, too little sleep.  If that describes you or someone you know, consider the Restful Sleep Gift Box.

-Guided meditation CD promotes feelings of peace, calm, safety and support

-Melatonin encourages normal sleep patterns

-Valerian Extract with Lemon Balm helps induce deep sleep

Reishi

Last but certainly not the least consequential of this assortment of health gifts is a powerful, immune enhancing mushroom.

Reishi Extract Mushroom Complex, 60 vegetarian capsules

You need only go to the Supplements section on this site to quickly observe that I’m way into supplements, so it’s only natural to suggest one as a gift.

I ready suggested Whey Protein above because I think it would benefit everyone.

With that in mind — which is to offer a supplement with universal benefit — consider a recent article in Life Extension Magazine. (Check out the Life Extension Membership Discounts“Super Sale”.)

The article was about a extensively studied supplement that is useful for improving the immune system, our body’s general defense mechanism against illness.

It’s called Reishi Extract Mushroom Complex.

I’ll let the article tell the tale in this synopsis:

Know anyone who often gets sick?  Give them Reishi Extract Mushroom Complex and you’ll get to become a hero.

So, that’s it.  Some good stuff here.  Do you have a favorite health product?  Tell us about it in the Comments section below.
