Yes, stress is a super ager, but it’s manageable and the benefits of doing so are huge. Watch SciShow’s Hank Green present some details, and Physicist Michio Kaku dive into how stress messes with genetics.

MY OPEN secret is that I’m very focused on life extension, as in mine — and thru many of the topics here explored on this site, yours.

Over the years, the stuff I’ve been doing seems to be working, and this has not gone unnoticed.

Now, when I do a detox cleanse, my buds clamor to jump aboard. When people are visiting and they see me reach for the supplement box, they want to know about my latest protocol. And, they wonder, why a once-committed gym rat now rarely enters one; or why I now stress mobility rather than heavy weightlifting exercises.

(I have nothing against gyms, just wanted to test what’s possible without one.)

Another open secret is that I intend to finally focus this blog on health matters related to living a long and strong life.

After all, that’s what I’m doing, day in, day out… step by step, I’m tweaking that which will – hopefully – add up to some fine, long, strong unencumbered living.

One tweak that is essential, and so really is not a “tweak” at all, but a “major rehab” is the topic of this post: “why stress is the biggest super ager of them all.”

We “Age” Based On How We Live

Let’s begin with the two ways you can measure aging.

In our normal parlance, the way we measure “age” is by math: Today’s date minus date of birth. The other way age may be measured is determined by genetics and behavior. Often this measure is called “bioage”, or “real age”, as Dr. Oz and his associates like to put it.

There’s nothing you can do about chronology – the math that measures your years on this planet, but there’s a ton that you can do about your biology, or bioage.

I follow a fellow named Doug who writes a blog called Health Matters. Recently, he tweeted a link to his Pinterest page that shows “385 of the most inspirational fitness pics you will ever see.” One is particularly relevant to us at present.

This is a picture of Ernestine Shephard, a 74-year old body builder who never stepped into a gym till she was 56!

How old do you think you’re body’s going to be when you’re 74? Certainly, Ernestine proves that chronology does not equal biology – her biological age is far younger than her actual age.

And, not to leave the other gender out of play, consider the famous example of Dr. Jeffry Life, the medical doctor who in the process of working away his obesity committed himself to youthful hormone balancing, healthy eating and lots of weight lifting.

This is Dr. Jeffrey Life at 72:

I present some details about him and his work here.

Now that you’ve had a glimpse of what’s possible, let’s turn to what may be the biggest thing in your life that could prevent you from living a long and healthy life.

It’s not a lack of exercise — though that does contribute to premature aging — nor is it sitting all day, overeating or binge drinking – all significant factors as well.

But the single biggest premature ager of them all is stress.

Chronic stress!

Chronic stress is not the type that enables you to instantly spring into action to avoid being tiger food, but the type that hold’s onto you all day, and all restless nightlong.

Hank Green now enters our stress story with a fun introduction to the biochemistry of stress in his SciShow video, “anxiety”. (Yeah, anxiety is stress.)

The Cortisol/Telomere Dance

We need to drill down into cortisol and telomeres, because when they join hands they can bring you down to your old, achy knees.

Cortisol is the major reason that I suggest you moderate your consumption of coffee.

Yes, it’s true that some recent research suggests it can be healthful, given that those with poor diets may get most of their antioxidants from coffee. But, using coffee as your primary source for antioxidants may be a high price to pay:

–> Drinking one cup drunk at 8:00 AM and your cortisol levels will be elevated till about 10:00 PM.

[If coffee, red meat or saturated fats are topics of interest, read: What You Need To Know About Coffee, Saturated Fat and Red Meat.]

Cortisol has earned its nickname, “The Death Hormone.” Elevated cortisol has long been known to do various nasty things to you, such as altering immune system responses and suppressing the digestive system, the reproductive system and growth processes.

But cortisol does something else that’s far more pernicious, which has only recently been proven, and was significant enough to win Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn a Nobel Prize in 2009.

Before I tell you what she discovered, you need to know about telomeres.

Telomeres are nucleotides found at the end of chromosomes that keep them (the chromosomes) from deterioration subsequent to each cell division. Telomeres are commonly compared to the plastic tips at the ends of shoelaces; without them, the shoelace would fray and eventually become useless.

As telomeres shorten, we age. In fact, scientists can accurately determine lifespan by measuring the length of your telomeres.

Back to Dr. Blackburn…

What Dr. Blackburn discovered was that the enzyme that keeps telomeres intact – called telomerase – is compromised by the elevated cortisol existing in a particular population, that of long-term care givers.

Turns out, this was the ideal group in which to measure consistently high cortisol levels. Long-term caregivers, such as those with both elderly parents and children to care for – and let’s add in a job – are under constant, if low level, stress.

Their adrenals are not making them sprint up a hillside to avoid the tiger, which would be fine (assuming the getaway was successful), because the cortisol pumping into the body would be temporary in this situation. Instead, the issue at hand here is the chronically elevated cortisol, which leads to reduced telomerase activity, and premature telomere shortening.

Next up, Physicist Michio Kaku talks telomeres and the one proven (and unpleasurable) way to extend lifespan:

Reduce Stress This Way

Have you heard the proposition that stress exists only inside your own head?

The idea here is that we each have a conscious choice about how to react to any external event that may intrude upon us.

The typical example is how two people could react completely differently to the same traffic jam. Person A leans on his horn, sticks his head out the window to hurl invectives, sweats and cusses. Lotsa cortisol pumping for Mr. A. Whereas, Ms. B is rocking to the music on her radio. She notices the pretty day, and gets a kick from watching Mr. A turn red, a really pretty shade of red, she thinks.

Our goal is to be B.

Integrating the right attitude into our consciousness is the first thing to do. (Remember, your thoughts and emotions constitute your attitude).

Other stress management activities include:

Eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise and plenty of sleep

Practicing relaxation techniques

Fostering healthy friendships

Having a sense of humor

Seeking professional counseling when needed

The payoff for reducing stress is pretty darn big. Beyond peace of mind, we’re talking a longer, healthier life.

UPDATE: Dr. Mercola just posted a good review of the damage stress does and his video reviewing some stress-busting ideas right here.

What’s Your BioAge?

As long as we’re on the topic, know that Dr. Oz, Dr. Rosen, and others have put together a questionnaire that measures your BioAge, or “real age” as they term it.

They also say that stress is the biggest ager of them all.

I recently watched a Dr. Oz show, which I think was called, “Drop A Decade”, where he shared some aging stats.

Here are some activities and the amount of “real age” reduction they enable, according to Drs Oz and Rosen:

- Meditation, 1.7 years
- Social Interaction, 8.5 years
- Daily Walk of 30 Minutes, 12 years
- Vitamin D, 1,000 IU/day, 2.6 years
- Daily Flossing, 6 years

I suggest that you don’t regard these numbers as set in stone, but estimates; still they give an idea of the relative merits of each activity.

If you’re curious about all this, you can go to the RealAge site, answer a comprehensive set of questions, and get an estimate for your real age.

Also, you may wish to read one or more of these posts pertinent to the subject at hand that live right here on this very site:

The unexpected pleasures of small surprises that make you smile, like music wafting on the wind. (Don’t miss the infographic!)

HEY, IT’S Sunday morning and sun is streaming in the picture windows and all is quiet except for the lilting sound of a flute being played by a neighbor.

The sound of this music feels really good.

That said, I know little about music.

Prior to high school, I grew up mostly in Ethiopia. In those formative years when other boys were getting their music and baseball indoctrination, I was on horseback with my BB gun strapped to my back making sure I didn’t venture where a 50 caliber was needed.

Fast forward about 100 years to this decidedly different continent… now, unsurprisingly given my history, when at home or working on something, I rarely think of music. But when it comes to me lilting in the wind, like this morning, I’m glad.

Which reminds me of a road trip from Santa Barbara to home here in Sausalito. I wrote about this in a post called, The Music I Lost and Found. It’s about how a long string of songs made a long road trip nearly blissful, despite a hailstorm.

[I link to some really good music there.]

The common thread between that trip and now is that some wonderful music turned some corner to find, surprise and delight me.

An “unexpected pleasure” as my Grandma would say.

Indeed.

And now, check out this wonderful and informative infographic from a whole list of sources listed on the bottom. If you wonder why you love music, you’ll soon learn why.

Dr. Mark Hyman has reduced the price of this Blood Sugar Solution. It’s a comprehensive, multi-tiered approach to fighting diabesity, the pernicious combination of diabetes and obesity that Dr. Hyman believes afflicts nearly 50% of Americans. You know people who can be helped. Check it out!

I FOLLOW Dr. Mark Hyman because, like Dr. Andrew Weil and a precious few other luminary doctors, his focus is on how things connect.

Say you have adult-onset diabetes. Well, why… where did it come from, what actions created it? Same queries with respect to heart disease or any other debilitating, chronic diseases.

This approach in medicine is referred to as “integrative” or “functional” medicine. It seeks and treats the causes of disease, not the symptoms. A pain killer may help reduce pain, but by itself does little, if anything, to remove the cause of the pain.

Dr. Hyman’s latest crusade is to help wake up people to the diabesity epidemic overtaking America.

I don’t know if Dr. Hyman originally coined the term, “diabesity”, but he’s the one blowing the clarion call to do something about it. What he’s doing is promoting the heck out of The Blood Sugar Solution Home Coaching Program.

Just like it sounds, diabesity is the unhappy combination of diabetes and obesity. It makes sense that there’s a term that refers to them both because it’s quite common that if you have adult-onset (or these days, juvenile-onset) diabetes, it was preceded by obesity.

[More on this in my post, The Diabesity Epidemic – It May Be Coming to You.]

Dr. Hyman estimates that nearly half of all Americans have diabesity. Given that about two-thirds of us are overweight (one-third obese, including children), he might be right.

Look like the picture below. If that’s how your midsection looks, you either may or soon may have diabesity. Surely, several people you know do.

All this brings me to an email I recieved today from Dr. Hyman. (I’m on his email list.) The email altered us to a deep discount he’s made to his The Blood Sugar Solution Home Coaching Program:

The email basically said this:

- The program is comprehensive and works to reduce fat and revamp your eating habits and hormones

- It’s not for everyone; rather for people who recognize they have a problem and are willing to be guided to solve it

- It’s a 9-part kit combining the best of his diabesity tools, tests, and information; namely:

#1: The Blood Sugar Solution Workshop

#2: The Blood Sugar Solution Workbook

#3: The UltraWellness® Nutrition Coaching

#4: Online Cookbook

#5: Two-Week Access to the New Online Blood Sugar Solution Course

#6: The Quick Start Guide

#7: The “How To Work With Your Doctor” Online Guidebook

#8: The Blood Sugar Solution Quizzes

#9: The Money-Saving Supplements Offer

The “Call to Action” boils down to this, in Dr. Hyman’s words:

“It retails for over $600 but, for a limited time, I’ve reduced the price to just $175. This is my attempt to get this valuable material into as many hands as possible, but please understand this: I can only offer a select number of kits at this price. And when that number is gone, they’re gone.”

You may be fit as a fiddle, but like I mentioned, you know people who aren’t, people who could benefit by this program. If so, let them know about it.

My father died from diabetes complications and I’ve watched my sister and mother deal with overweight issues all their adult lives. This thing hits close to home, so when I see something that may work, I feel compelled to promote it. I get nothing back from doing this other than the good feeling that this information may be helpful to those who need it.

Dr. Hyman and his program are the real deal — check it out!

Using antidepressants are not the only way give relief to mild from moderate depression. Dr. Weil has four suggestions, I’ve written about 10. Here’s how a little walk with Rumi can help relieve the blues.

BEFORE I go amend a post I wrote a while back suggesting some actions to help alleviate depression (or the moody blues), I want to more fully explore a simple but wonderful act with you right here.

Late last November, I wrote a post I named, A Little Depressed? 10 Actions That Help Me. As I wrote it, I knew that over time I’d keep adding to it as new “acts” arose in my life that I found were worthwhile behaviors that can clearly shifts one’s (or at least my) mind set.

It all began with finding the iPod that I thought was lost forever. Not one to listen much to music on iPods, I was, nevertheless, so pleased to find it that I affixed the ear plugs, grabbed my walking shoes and went for a jaunt.

I wasn’t in a foul mood at all, but it soon occurred to me that the walking combined with the music – a particular kind (in fact, not music per se at all) – carried me to a place that cradled me with sweet endorphins that swept all my cares away.

Now, readers of my various posts on depression, such as Dr. Weil’s Four Alternatives to Antidepressant Drugs (great pod cast interview there with Dr. Weil), know that I believe (as does Dr. Weil) that many people with mild to moderate depression may be able to control it without antidepressants (go to the above link for more on this).

Dr. Weil has his “four alternatives” and I have my “10 (now 11) actions”, and if you throw them in a shaker jar and shake, shake, shake… just maybe those antidepressant pills can be shaken from the pill box into the garbage.

A Music Recommendation (not quite)

Yeah, whatever moves you, whatever can shift you to a better mental state… that’s the recommendation. But for me today, the music itself was a minor, background harp plucking here and there. What was front and center, and largely responsible for my shift in consciousness, was Rumi.

For those of you who don’t know, Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī was a brilliant and revolutionary Persian Sufi, mystic, poet and philosopher of the 13th Century. He’s considered one of the best poets of all time.

It was Rumi’s poetry, as translated and spoken by the wonderfully erudite Coleman Barks, that made that walk great, and inspired this post.

Check it out. Go here and you can listen to the Coleman Barks album, What Was Said to the Rose. Start with the first selection, What Was Told and keep going till you’re mesmerized. For your own happy walk, download What Was Said to the Rose on whatever device will play it and go outside and take a walk, particularly the next time you’re blue.

P.S. I’d really enjoy it if you’d share your favorite poem in the Comments section below.

The science is in – for mild to moderate depression, pharmaceutical antidepressants are no more effective than placebos. But the science also says that there are four steps you can take that are effective to reduce depression. Reducing or eliminating mild/moderate depression is all about anti-inflammatory foods, supplements, exercise and a shift in cognition (perception).

ONE OF my favorite doctors in the public arena is Dr. Andrew Weil. Among the many reasons that I like him is that he’s joyful, smart, articulate, iconoclastic, has debunked many myths and misrepresentations in the health field, written insightful books, and has promoted “functional medicine”, which seeks to understand and treat a person’s entire body as it relates to the root causes of disease or dysfunction, not simply wrestle with symptoms. (Whew!)

So, when I heard that the good doctor was to be interviewed by Ira Flatow on Talk of the Nation about his new book, Spontaneous Happiness: How to Discover and Embrace Your Body’s Natural Ability to Maintain and Heal Itself, I tuned my dial to KQED and opened my mind to be educated.

Mr. Flatow set the stage before introducing Dr. Weil by citing some ugly statistics: In America, use of medications are up by over 400% since 1988, and one in ten people over the age of 12 take antidepressant drugs according to the CDC.

(Listen to the podcast here.)

For Most, Antidepressant Drugs Don’t Work

Dr. Weil is not the only health practitioner who thinks that this state of affairs is ridiculous. He and others (notably, Dr. Mark Hyman) point out that not only can antidepressant pharmaceutical drugs cause dangerous side effects, but that for mild to moderate depression, they do not work any better than placebos.

The common antidepressant drugs are of a drug classification called “Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors”, or “SSRI”. Over the years, the pharmaceutical companies with their ubiquitous TV ads have done a good job of convincing too many of us that normal, cyclical (like with the onset of winter) bouts of mild to moderate depression is a big problem that you better not cope with all by yourself, so take this drug.

Problem is, antidepressant drugs don’t work for mild to moderate depression* – you’ll do as well with a sugar pill, on average, but (adding injury to insult), they can cause pernicious side effects, such as:

Nausea

Dry mouth

Headache

Diarrhea

Nervousness, agitation or restlessness

Reduced sexual desire or difficulty reaching orgasm

Inability to maintain an erection (erectile dysfunction)

Rash

Increased sweating

Weight gain

Drowsiness

Insomnia

(*Bi-polar and severe depression is in a completely different category, and those with these conditions need to stay on their meds.)

And there’s another pretty whomping problem with the SSRI class of antidepressant drugs… with long-term use SSRIs can produce the very same problem – depression – that they’re made to alleviate. This situation is described by the “homeostasis effect”, whereby a system, like the body, endeavors to bring itself back to the norm when an outside or unnatural agent is introduced into the system.

Although not often described as such, we hear about this all the time when a doctor or news report describes that some bacteria has become resistant to inoculants, and as such are called, “drug-resistant bacteria”. This also is common with allergy or acid reflex drugs, wherein for some people the more they’re used, the less effective they become.

The Role of Inflammation on Depression

Over the past few years, scientists have been isolating inflammation as a root cause of many degenerative diseases, such as arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, irritable bowel syndrome, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and others. I just got 162,000,000 results from a Google search for “inflammation-based diseases”. Naturally, given this growing understanding of the linkage of inflammation and disease, the marketplace now offers us “Inflammation Diets”, including the spot-on inflammation-reducing tips from Dr. Weil himself.

Inflammation is a prevalent physical and mental health problem because of the poor food choices we make. In the Talk of the Nation radio interview, Dr. Weil briefly describes how processed and manufactured food can cause inflammation, in part by disrupting the right balance between Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids, as well as by dominating the banquet of food choices which consists of poorly grown meat (animals fed grains not grass), simple carbohydrates (white flours, rice, food in boxes) and fats (saturated, trans fat, hydrogenated).

The first clue about the causal link between inflammation markers in the body and depression happened on farms in the 1950s. Farmers recognized that when their cows, sheep and pigs were sick because they exhibited a specific behaviors: they became anti-social, maintained distance from the herd, were listless.

In the 1970s, scientists discovered inflammation markers in the blood supply of sick animals that they termed, “Blood Factor X”. They soon understood that much of the sickness exhibited by farm animals had to do with inflammation. In people, the researchers discovered that inflammation could induce changes in the brain that could instigate depression, leading some very few in the medical field to treat mild to moderate depression via anti-inflammatory foods and treatments.

Four Steps to Reduce Depression

Back now to Dr. Weil’s new book, Spontaneous Happiness. This book presents a step-by-step, week-by-week , scientifically-based road map for improving, or eliminating mild to moderate depression. (There’s a link to it below.)

I have not read the book, but from Dr. Weil’s radio interview, I can summarize what I’ll call “four steps to reduce depression”. Step one is to avoid foods that cause inflammation — those processed, manufactured foods — and to eat instead anti-inflammatory foods. Step two is to take certain, proven supplements proven to reduce mild to moderate depression. Step three is to exercise. Step four is to change one’s perception, a cognitive behavioral shift, if you will.

Step 1 – Eat Anti-inflammatory Foods

Feed animals that eat grass rather than grain (like corn) have substantially more omega-3 fatty acids in their meat. Flaxseed oil, pumpkin seed oil, walnut oil and fish oil are rich in omega-3 fatty acids; wherein corn, safflower, sunflower, soybean, cottonseed oil, and olive oil (olive oil being a perfectly good oil in moderation and appropriate for cooking) contain omega-6 fatty acids.

A healthy diet should consist of roughly 2 – 4 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids. The typical American diet tends to contain 14 – 25 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids, and many researchers believe this imbalance is a significant factor in the rising rate of inflammatory disorders in the United States.

[Want to learn more about healthy and unhealthy fats? Read Eating Fat is Good… Maybe…Could Be… Sometimes.]

Recently, the FDA established a new food pyramid that is no longer a pyramid, but a plate. I describe it in Yes, Choose My Food Plate and The New Food Pyramid is a Plate. Dr. Weil responded by creating a plate of his own, but ahhh, kept it as a pyramid. Confused? Don’t be… be it plate or pyramid, the point is to know what foods to eat, and Dr. Weil conscientiously chooses inflammation-fighting foods.

What is Dr. Weil’s Anti-Inflammatory Food Pyramid?

It is a practical eating guide that consumers of all ages can use, with tips on how to reduce risks of age-related diseases and improve overall health through diet.

It is an interactive educational graphic to help today’s families prevent disease while eating well.

It is a simple tool that promotes optimum health and healthy aging by providing dietary advice that addresses inflammation.

Learn more about it here.

As mentioned, the key foods to avoid are those that are processed and manufactured (in boxes, cans and plastic); grain-fed meat and dairy as opposed to animals raised on grass; simple carbs such as white bread, white rice, potatoes; and unhealthy fats, such as trans fats, saturated fats and partially hydrogenated oils.

Here’s a list of Dr. Weil’s recommended food choices

Step 2 – Take Antidepressant Supplements

The proven supplements to help ameliorate mild to moderate depression include fish oil, vitamin D3, vitamin B12 and SAMe.

I’ve written about SAMe and a powerful type of fish oil called, “krill oil” in Emotional Wellbeing (Chemistry Helps!), and about Vitamin D3 here and here.

Dr. Weil recommends two to four grams of fish oil per day.

Don’t worry about contaminant in your fish oil supplement if manufactured from a reliable brand, as typically they are molecularly distilled and thus free from PCBs and mercury, etc.

Step 3 – Exercise!

Exercise is a proven method to improve mild to moderate depression. Whether you’re doing an aerobic or anaerobic exercise, it does a body, and a mind good. One reason is that exercise decreases the stress hormones such as cortisol, and increases those “feel-good” endorphins, such as epinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine.

I have two rules for beginner exercisers:

1. Recruit a buddy to do it with you, and

2. Begin with an exercise routine that you’re willing to consistently do.

If you’re completely out of shape, walk, and walk quickly. When this becomes comfortable, walk up hills. If you can, begin jogging. In between walking days, learn and do yoga or some strength-producing exercises, such as push-ups and squats. Begin on your knees if you need to for the push-ups, and hold on to a chair for the squats.

Step 4 – Change Your Perception

A teacher once told me and the rest of the class, “Attitude is everything!”. The near-miracle is being able to change it, cause for most of us our attitude is cemented in place, and perhaps it’s not a very good place.

But for those of you that are willing to work on shifting your mind set to improve your mental well being, consider the following information gleaned from Dr. Weil, with a healthy (hopefully) dose of my interpretation.

First, it’s helpful to know that some amount of depression is quite normal. What would be abnormal for all except Buddhist monks is to be always happy. Getting a bit depressed is common during specific times of your life and in seasons of the year. Common times to feel low in life are after child birth, when the kids fly the nest, during menopause, during a career shift, when middle age first hits, during illness, etc. The onset of winter, with its cold and reduced light, can also ignite depression.

Know that when mild to moderate depression happens – the kind that DOES NOT bring you to the highest bridge or building in the neighborhood – there are better methods to combat it than drugs, as this post has been imploring. Along with the three steps already described, working on changing your perception could be very helpful.

Dr. Weil suggests to begin improving your perception/cognition with shutting off the things that make your mind flutter, meaning things that distract you from being present, from being focused on one thing at a time.

Turns out, whether you believe it true for you or not, humans are not good at multi-tasking. This has been studied exhaustively. The brain doesn’t multi-task well, so what it does is shift back and forth between the things you’re doing, trying to focus individually on each thing, and not doing it well. This does not produce calmness – just the opposite.

So, the first thing to awaken to is how you manage your day. If too much multi-tasking is happening, try to simply focus on one thing at a time till it’s as complete as you need it to be for the day. Improve your well-being by turning off the TV and all the electronics that compete for your attention, like every time that “ping” sound happens on your cell phone to alert you to a new text message. That sound and inevitable reaction, takes you from your focus. On a subtle level, it’s stressful if frequently repeated.

There are two things to practice in order to shift perception and improve mild to moderate depression, says Dr. Weil in this radio interview: Meditation and Gratitude.

Meditation takes practice. No one’s good at it immediately. But it’s worth trying because meditation helps you change your reaction to things. As the saying goes, “You can’t change what happens to you, but you can change your reaction to it”.

One basic method to learn to meditate is simply to sit comfortably in a place where there’ll be no distractions for 15 minutes (to start), close your eyes and follow your breath. “Follow your breath” means to stay focused on it, allowing the breath to come in and go out as it will. Soon, just by focusing on it, the inhalation and exhalation will become longer and deeper. When your mind drifts, gently bring it back. If silently reciting some mantra, or affirmation helps, add that. If focusing on an object in your mind’s eye helps, do that. But first get used to following your breath. Over time, you’ll realize that every stress point in your life is being handled with greater ease.

Be grateful. Even those of us in very bad situations can find something day to day to be grateful about. Try… you will find something. The key for this to improve your mindset is to recognize those things for which you’re grateful, and express it. This can be done each evening before bed when you write down the things for which you have gratitude that happened, or were recognized that day.

I close this post with the admonition that all that’s written may be considered helpful tips to help reduce mild to moderate depression, not severe depression. If you’re on a doctor-prescribed antidepressant, you will need to work with your doctor to wean yourself from the drug as you incorporate the suggestions here reported.

Many blessings to you.

I know you’re human, because no other creatures can read, and you’re reading this, so you’re human. Since you’re human, you get depressed from time to time. Me too! Here are <del>10</del> 11 actions to beat your depression into submission. Collectively, they address the dimensions within which we live our lives.

I HAPPEN to have a high tolerance for pain, or so it seems. I’ve gone years without work, a “significant other” and – what I feel is worse – without creating much of value. Anyone with normal pain receptors would have been compelled to do something dramatic to change the channel. I, however, sit still and stare out from various windows in my home at the sailboats cruising by in the bay below.

(A sweet picture, yes?)

Fortunately, these latent periods have been appreciatively disrupted by work and love and all the stuff concomitant with them. So, I’m not terminally flirting with pain, or… as it might better be known… with depression. And, to be fair, the depression I’m speaking of is not the kind that is so debilitating that the “flirting” is with prospects of leaping from tall building and bridges. Rather, here the wrestling match is with that type of depression that is normative for most of us: small doses of depression, but substantial enough to categorize a week here and there as very sub-par.

From what I’ve read, many of us so disdain these depressed periods that we reflexively grab some pharmaceutical or another – Lexapro, Effexor, Cymbalta, Zoloft, Paxil – take your pick; certainly, the TV commercials will tell you that there’s no need to be down, just drug up to get up.

The commercials must machine gun the “cover-their-ass” pronouncements of the ill effects that might accompany your drug of choice, but what is not said is that depression drugs may not work at all. This sad fact I report in Do Depression Drugs Work? which points to evidence that antidepressants, on average, may be little more effective than sugar pills in treating depression.

So, what should we sometimes depressed humans to do?

<del>10</del> 11 Depression-beating Actions

[UPDATE: Check out Dr. Weil's Four Alternatives to Antidepressant Drugs.]

This is what I’ve done to help myself reset, punch back, ignore, take leave of, evaporate my bouts of depression. Disclaimer: These suggestions are not for the really strong type of depression that may sink you into an oblivion from which you may not reappear.

1. Implement a daily schedule that you can adhere to. This means that as soon as you awaken, you have something to do that you’re willing to do.

2. Upon arising, take a shower and make it hot and cold to revitalize your body and stimulate your mind

3. Dress yourself… not in the afternoon, but in the morning, and dress as if you have something to do, somewhere to go, even if you don’t; however, if you follow #1, you should have something scheduled.

4. Listen to music, the kind that makes you feel good. You can dial in what you need in the moment. (Read how music helps health: Lost and Found Radio and Music’s Affect on Health.)

5. Take supplements known to be useful to ameliorate depression. Krill Oil has a phospholipid form of omega-3 which is absorbed faster and more efficiently than the triglyceride form typically found in fish oil. Omega-3 fatty acids are reputed to help with stress, promote heart health and lubricate joints. (Read this on the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids and the London Cabbie study.) SAM-e helps balance Dopamine & serotonin are neurotransmitters that control mood and pain. But that’s just for starters — SAM-e also helps support cartilage-producing cells, and produces glutathione for detoxification, while replenishing the liver’s own SAMe supply. I’ve written about both these supplements here, and suggest you take look.

6. Recruit a Buddy, someone in whom you can entrust your innermost self and will help lift you up when way down low.

7. Exercise! Grab that buddy, or give him/her permission to grab you, and go exercise. Walk, jog, yoga, push-ups – just do it, and if you want to know why, read what the Mayo Clinic has to say about how exercise eases the symptoms of depression and anxiety. Yes, it gets that dopamine and endorphins flowing – all feel-good chemicals that can help.

8. Smile in front of a mirror. Yes, this may be horrifying at first as that reflection reveals that sad, sorry, self-indulgent face, but stay with it and something deep within you may arise and shout “fuck this!”. After that, a smile may begin to shimmer on the horizon, and this will shift things for the better.

9. Meditate. Yeah, like all of these suggestions, frankly, getting yourself to mediate when depressed has about as much a chance of success as to chant, “I am not depressed” ten times whilst hopping in a circle in on one foot. That’s why #6 is so important. Remember, you gave Buddy permission to be a pain in the ass, so he/she will come over, get your sorry self off the couch and out of the bon bon box. Sit on a cushion, make up a feel-good mantra to focus on, and just follow your breath for ten minutes. Couldn’t hurt. Extra points: Make that mantra about three things for which you’re grateful. One of them could be gratitude that you’re sitting in meditation.

10. Read a biography. Choose a biography about someone who arose from the ashes, someone perhaps with whom you can relate. Could be inspiring!

11. Walk with Rumi. When you’re down, you need ventilation and inspiration, a potent combo. The walk with take care of the first, and the Sufi mystic poet, Rumi will be the inspiration. Whatever your view is of a higher power, ole Rumi will take you one step closer. For more on this, read Relief from Depression with Rumi.

I’ve done all these things, here and there, when I remember and am not so depressed to do something. Yeah, that’s the catch, so remember #6.

Hey, do you do something that helps with your moments of depression, other than drugs? If so, please tell us in the Comments section below.

Meditation delivers better health, emotional resiliency and brain power. All you have to do is… to do it a bit each day. The science is clear – -meditation builds a better you. Here are seven benefits of meditation.

MY BUDDY, Steve, is a peripatetic searcher for knowledge, particularly self-knowledge. He has boundless energy, few preconceptions that he’s unwilling to challenge, punches through fears, and over the last few years has done what the cartoonist Stine made popular with his greeting cards — Steve is willing to “look in to find out.”

We’re talking live-in workshop retreats and various deep dive psychotherapies. And now, Steve has added meditation to the list. He recently learned Transcendental Meditation, and now sits daily and relaxes into the vibe.

“It’s making a difference”, Steve announced to me at our café hangout last weekend. I looked up from the section of Sunday’s New York Times that he gave me to give him an inquiring look. I said nothing but wondered how he could pin point the benefits of meditation given all the other modalities in which he’s immersed.

He punctuated the pause with a smirk, and we both returned to our respective reads. It doesn’t matter that we didn’t dive into how meditation is affecting Steve, for we both know.

I’ve been an on and off meditator for 30 years. It’s value is obvious to me. And now with all the gadgets available to measure brain activity, scientists are learning just what’s going on. Here are some…

Seven Benefits of Meditation

1. A more plastic brain. This is a strange term, but it’s nearly literal because consistent meditation leads to what’s referred to as neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to respond to certain inputs by changing itself structurally and functionally. Now, there are even methods presented online that studies show can improve your brains, such as the games developed by Lumosity. That the brain is actually “plastic” – can change – is a big deal, as scientists formerly believed that the brain essentially stopped changing after adulthood.

2. A thicker brain. Get a thicker brain in just 40 minutes a day! A 2005 study on American men and women who meditated a mere 40 minutes a day showed that they had thicker cortical walls than non-meditators. Thicker biceps, yes, but why would you want a thicker brain? Well, a thicker brain results in a brain that’s aging at a slower rate, better decision making, attention and memory. Thick brains are better than thick biceps after all.

3. A more alert brain. In a 2006 study, college students were asked to either sleep, meditate or watch TV. They were then tested on their alertness by being asked to hit a button every time a light flashed on a screen. By a significant 10%, the meditators did better than the nappers and TV watchers .

4. A more relaxed brain. Do you have high blood pressure? In 2008, Dr. Randy Zusman, a doctor at the Massachusetts General Hospital, asked patients suffering from high blood pressure, but not on medication, to try a meditation-based relaxation program for three months. After meditating regularly for three months, 40 of the 60 patients showed significant drops in blood pressure levels . The reason? Relaxation results in the formation of nitric oxide which opens up your blood vessels.

5. A longer-lived brain. Telomeres — the protective caps at the end of our chromosomes — are the new frontier of anti-aging science. (Watch Nobel prize winner Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn tell you about telomeres in Three Months to Longer Life. ) Having longer telomeres mean that you’re likely to live longer. Research done by the University of California, Davis’ Shamatha Project has shown that meditators have significantly higher telomerase activity that non-meditators. Telomerase is the enzyme that helps build telomeres. When telomerase activity shifts into high gear, it can translate into stronger and longer telomeres .

6. A more resilient brain. Meaning, a better immune system. A 2008 study on HIV positive patients found that, after an eight-week meditation course, patients who’d meditated showed no decline in lymphocyte content compared with non-meditators who showed significant reduction in lymphocytes. Lymphocytes or white blood cells are the “brain” of the body’s immune system, and are particularly important for HIV positive people. The study also found that lymphocyte levels actually went up with each meditation session.

7. A pain-free brain. Well, the brain itself doesn’t actually feel pain, but it does command how you feel it. Earlier this year, a study conducted by Wake Forest Baptist University found that meditation could reduce pain intensity by 40 percent and pain unpleasantness by 57 percent. Pretty impressive given that morphine and other pain-relieving drugs typically show a pain reduction of only 25 percent.

There’s some more information for each of these seven at the original article that inspired this summary, so if interested, go take a read here.

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them. In his column, 545 vs. 300,000,000 People, retired columnist Charlie Reese excoriates the people who are responsible for deficits and the debt.

OK, THIS is another off-topic post, but I simply can’t help myself. I’ve been glued to the debate and actions, or lack thereof, about America’s deficit/debt problem.

This morning, I received an email about our politicians’ inability to govern that I guess is making the rounds. It was written by Charley Reese, a retired columnist for the Orlando Sentinel. The upshot of the column is that the 535 members of Congress are fully responsible for the state of our Union. And that’s why the title of Charley Reese’s column is, “545 vs. 300,000,000 People”

I bet you’ll find it hard not to agree with Mr. Reese’s conclusions, and would appreciate you stating your views in the Comments section below.

Do you think he’s right or wrong?

And now to Charley Reese of the Orlando Sentinel and his column, “545 vs. 300,000,000 People”:

“Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don’t propose a federal budget. The President does.

You and I don’t have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.

You and I don’t write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don’t set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don’t control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a President to do one cotton-picking thing. I don’t care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator’s responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The President can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? John Boehner. He is the leader of the majority party. He and fellow House members, not the President, can approve any budget they want. If the President vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted — by present facts — of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can’t think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it’s because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it’s because they want it in the red.

If the Army & Marines are in Iraq and Afghanistan it’s because they want them in Iraq and Afghanistan …

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it’s because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like “the economy,” “inflation,” or “politics” that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.

Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees…

We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!”

– Charlie Reese is a former columnist of the Orlando Sentinel Newspaper.

Another left turn here from health matters to other stuff, like the debt crisis and politics. Let’s just call it a blog post about the health of the American political system.

WE’RE ALL multi-dimensional beings and I’m not all about health. Other stuff pervades my consciousness. Like politics.

At this point, my regular readers sigh and mutter, “Here he goes again…”. Yes, this is a deviation from health matters. A full blast turn into one of my pet subjects – politics!

Strangely, it is possible that you haven’t heard about America’s “debt crisis” and the game of “chicken” now being played by Repubs and Demos in Washington. Before I saw those Leno or Letterman shows where one of them wanders around asking people on the streets about geography, or history, or politics, and make fun out of how little is known about geography, or history, or politics – well, before then I would presume that EVERYONE in the U.S. knows about the debt crisis and that a few might have strong views on the matter.

Maybe you do, maybe not, but Jeff Rose does, and the rest of this post belongs to him. Because, you see, Jeff Rose pays attention to what’s up everywhere and writes a weekly email newsletter about it. Today’s bit about the debt crises and recent political shenanigans I deem worth sharing with you.

Please share your thoughts in the Comments section below.

Now, from Jeff Rose:

I don’t care who wins or loses in the debt limit fight. The entire population of the US (and maybe lots of the world) loses. It seems not to matter if the world’s stock markets crash, if the interest on US debt soars, or if the US spirals back into a depression as long as one party can blame the other. Even lobbyists are confused. It almost makes me nostalgic for the smoke-filled back rooms where deals were actually made.

The independent Center on Budget and Policy Priorities says that the Boehner plan could very well “produce the greatest increase in poverty and hardship produced by any law in modern U.S. history.” Small people are intent on making the US much less great, destroying the village without saving it. Why should anyone think the US would do the honorable (full faith and credit) thing if it can’t even do the logical thing?

The money that the house says can’t be spent has already been authorized by that same house. We know that whatever is done will be a reaction without a strategic plan. Obama has been relegated to the grandstands. We find out that there are 39 riders on the Republican appropriations bill that all curtail environmental regulation. Boehner said that the Democrats would be responsible for a potential economic catastrophe if the senate didn’t vote for his plan. So much for compromise.

Joe Walsh, a freshman tea party congressman from Illinois says that he “won’t place one more dollar of debt upon the backs of my kids”. His ex-wife claims he owes her and the kids $100,000. Want congress to move? Take away their barbershop, gym, parking lot, dining room, and other perks. We’re already on the verge of another recession. What will draconian spending cuts do to the already shaky economy?

Finally, Friday the house Republicans mustered barely enough votes for a plan that was entirely unacceptable to the Democrats controlling the senate. It extends the debt ceiling for only six months and requires a balanced budget amendment. It was immediately tabled in the senate. So far on Friday, Obama has lost 33,000 Twitter followers. Come Saturday, all sides are “fully engaged”. In posturing? Sunday…same, same, with no leaders in sight (or in Washington). What would Jesus do? He’d take care of the poor.

The Republican demand to save $16 million on the FAA budget by cutting subsidies to rural airports is costing us $25 million a day in uncollected excise taxes. The FAA shutdown continues. The airlines are keeping the federal taxes that they don’t now have to pass on to the government.

Politics makes no sense.

The wealth gap between whites and non-whites is getting to be a chasm. The median wealth of white U.S. households in 2009 was $113,149, compared with $6,325 for Hispanics and $5,677 for blacks, according to the analysis by the Pew Research Center. That’s awful. We spend 75% more per person on health care than other rich countries without better results. That’s awful.

The US rural population is down to 16% of the total population. Farm interests are fighting a new immigration crackdown. Americans won’t pick produce. Unpicked produce rots. End of story.

You can help pay off the national debt with a check to “Bureau of Public Debt”. It’s deductible.

The national debt is increasing at about $3.83 billion a day. US officials tell us that al-Qaeda’s days are numbered but that al-Qaeda Yemen is growing. Are we supposed to understand the subtlety? Two days later we hear the administration saying that Iran is supporting al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.

The post office is looking at another 3,700 neighborhood post offices to be closed, many in rural areas. Losing money? Cut spending. Can’t bitch. Walter Reed’s 102-year run was pretty good for a hospital.

One of the endless blue ribbon committees has recommended closing up Yucca Mountain and put nuclear waste somewhere else. Yea! I live in Nevada. The SEC has subpoenaed production and economic records from shale gas developers. The suspicion is that they are telling Wall Street different stories than those being told to regulators.

Authorities still haven’t found the 26 AK-74’s stolen from Ft. Irwin, CA. They are updated versions of the old AK-47. Newt has closed his account at Tiffany’s. Rick Perry can’t be a frontrunner until he gets into the race. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is fat and asthmatic, not what we’re looking for in a presidential contender. He is (was?) on Romney’s short list for veep.

I (Joe Garma) now return to thank Jeff Rose for permitting me to post this, to thank you for your read, to acknowledge that we covered a lot of ground of some pretty complicated stuff, and to ask that you weigh in about how you feel about it in the Comments section below.

Am on a myth roll… this one, “10 winter health myths”. After all, it is winter, you want to be healthy, so check it out.

I JUST can’t help myself. Just read another list of health myths, and am compelled to list them, but this time, I’ll leave it to you to click over to the original article rather than summarize them (along with my two cents), as I did yesterday’s post, 12 Myths About Cholesterol.

This one is from Yahoo! Health and it’s called, 10 Winter Health Myths Exposed, by Sara Jio. Go to her article and read the specifics about why these commonly held beliefs are bunk, or continue on here to scan the list.

Here they are, 10 Winter Health Myths:

You can catch a cold by being out in the elements too long. (It isn’t the cold, it’s the bacteria and viruses.)

More people are depressed during the winter months. (Perhaps a bit more stress, but not depression.)

Chicken soup helping a cold is an “old wives tale”. (Could help the immune system and assist in zapping the cold.)

Wear a hat cause you lose must of your heat via the head. (Nope, first be concerned with your torso – wear a warm jacket.)

Shouldn’t exercise in the cold. (Nope, just warm up first.)

We need more sleep in the winter. (Not a need, but perhaps a compulsion.)

Don’t need sunscreen in the winter. (Yes you do… the Sun and UV rays are still present.)

Frostbite is hard to get. (No, can happen in just 30 minutes.)

Dry skin is harmless and a winter issue. (Maybe not, as it can induce infection.)

Can’t get allergies during the winter. (Depends – pollen allergy suffers are safe, but indoor allergies get worse.)

Well, I guess I did include a summary (actually, a conclusion) for each of these 10 winter health myths, but for more insight and a better understanding, go read Sara Jio’s article.
