Stop living by default and start to live by design!

IS IT optimistic to suggest that you just have one addiction?

Well, that’s for you to determine after reading the list presented by Tom Ferry in his post called: The 4 Addictions That Destroy Your Dreams (They’re Not What You Think).

If you sometimes have emotional/psychological struggles, or are just simply curious about human dramas, you may want to click the above link and take a read.

In the article, Mr. Ferry explores the dynamic behind the four addictions that “destroy more dreams, more hopes and more lives than alcohol, drugs, food, gambling or sex combined.”

The Four Addictions

1) The Addiction to opinions of other people. As a society, we’re addicted to what others think about us and how others’ views of the world affect us.

2) The Addiction to drama. Some people are drawn to and consumed by any event or situation that occupies their thoughts and fills their mind with negativity, which often brings attention to them in unproductive ways.

3) The Addiction to the past. These people have an unhealthy attachment to events or situations that have occurred in the past. They’re stuck in how things used to be.

4) The Addiction to worry. This addiction is comprised of all the negative and self-defeating thoughts that make us anxious, disturbed, upset and stressed, that hold us back in life.

Which one (or ones) is yours?

For me it’s #3 – the addiction to the past.  My struggle is to let go of past mistakes and the regrets they foster in the present.  Because I’m in a difficult spot now, I constantly seek to understand how past decisions (or the lack thereof) and actions (or the lack thereof) have created my unappreciated present.

I say “unappreciated” because there are lots of things in most of our lives that are good and overlooked.  We tend to overlook what is working and focus all our attention, often negative attention, on what  is perceived to be not working.

Anyway, The 4 Addictions That Destroy Your Dreams (They’re Not What You Think) is a quick and insightful read that may help you reveal what is holding you back from living a more conscious and rewarding life.

Yep.
