THE NIMBLE programmers of all things iPhone are jumping on the H1N1 (“Swine Flu”) bandwagon with a useful $1.99 Swine Flu Application, which includes videos, animations and text to teach the basics about swine flu, how to reduce its, and how to prepare business for the pandemic.

Importantly, the application also features real-time updates and news from Harvard Medical School about H1N1 as this flu, and measures to control it, evolve.

Some features of Swine Flu Application are:

  • A “HealthMap” monitors how close outbreaks are to your location.
  • An interactive symptom checker that helps determine if your symptoms indicate H1N1, and when it is wise to contact your doctor.
  • It includes hotlines and numbers to call (based on your location) in case of an emergency, or should you want more information about H1N1.

There are other apps that provide similar services, such as the Swine Flu Tracker by IntuApps, and H1N1 Swine Flu Command Center by noMind Software, but none have the backing of  a medical institutions with the reputation like Harvard’s.

The Swine Flu App is part of Harvard Medical School’s greater mobile strategy, called HMS Mobile, which aims to deliver a series of iPhone Applications aimed at promoting public health.

Note: I don’t have an iPhone and have not personally evaluated this application.  It appears to be useful for those who subscribe to the traditional medical perspective about this virus, which continues to be hotly debated.  I’ve been posting regular summaries of the evolving H1N1 story, including some doctor-prescribed vaccine alternatives.  Check out the “Recommended Reading” below, or click “Flu/Virus” under “Topics” in the sidebar on the right hand side of your screen.

If you have any stories, suggestions, or remedies to share, please do so in “Comments” below.
